About Wes Mckinney

Background

Wes McKinney is the creator of the Python pandas library and a co-creator of Apache Arrow and Ibis. He wrote three editions of "Python for Data Analysis". He started pandas as a personal data analysis toolkit at AQR in 2007-2008. Before his later ventures he worked at Cloudera and Two Sigma Investments and co-founded DataPad.

In April 2018 he worked with RStudio (now Posit) and Two Sigma to create Ursa Labs, a not-for-profit open source group. Ursa Labs became part of Voltron Data in 2021, and Voltron Data's $110 million raise was announced in 2022. He was CTO and co-founder of Voltron Data and remains a Senior Advisor there.

Today he is Founder of Kenn Software, which builds AI developer tools such as agentsview, roborev and msgvault. He is also a Principal Architect at Posit, where he contributes to Python and AI strategy.

Angel investing track record

By his own account he has made more than 40 angel investments, focused on data infrastructure, data science, accelerated computing and developer tools. He says he started as a solo angel investing in data startups. He later launched Composed Ventures, which he describes as a micro VC fund, and he is its general partner. His site describes him as an active angel investor and advisor.

AI investments

His public AI-related investing is tied to his data and developer tools focus. He took part in Row Zero's $10M seed round, announced on May 15, 2025 and led by IA Ventures. Row Zero said it would use the money to integrate AI into its spreadsheet and to improve support for Python-based workflows. The Lounge deals desk lists this round, but the press release and coverage I found date it to May 2025. I could not find other named AI investments with years.

Investment focus

He has said he prefers technical founders, especially technical CEOs. His thesis centers on a composable data stack, where data systems become more modular and interoperable. Composed Ventures covers data infrastructure, data science, accelerated computing, developer tools and deep tech. I found no public statement of check size, fund size or preferred geography.
