Nvidia reportedly in talks to buy Reflection AI or deepen its $800M stake in the open-weights lab

The Financial Times reported on Saturday, in a story Reuters relayed but could not verify, that Nvidia is negotiating either a larger investment in Reflection AI or an outright purchase. Options reportedly include hiring the staff and licensing the technology rather than buying the company. A deal could land within weeks, though the talks may still collapse. Neither company commented. Reflection was founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou. Nvidia has already put $800 million into it, and Laskin said in April the startup was raising at a $25 billion pre-money valuation. On Monday it shipped Beam, its first open-weight model, aimed at coding and agent work against cheaper Chinese rivals like DeepSeek and Kimi. For founders, this would put the largest chip supplier directly into the business of producing frontier open-weight models, a category US labs have mostly left to China. It also shows the license-and-hire deal pattern is now the default exit route for well-funded model labs.
