About Andy Toulis

Background

Andy Toulis is a machine learning engineer based in London. Crunchbase lists his education as the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo. He worked at Shopify on recommender systems and AI assistants, where he met his later co-founder Marvin Purtorab. In 2022 he co-presented a Haystack US talk with Doug Turnbull on Bayesian optimization of search relevance at Shopify.

After Shopify, Toulis and Purtorab both joined Cohere, the enterprise AI platform. Toulis worked there as a machine learning engineer and posted publicly about the Command-R model release.

In April 2024 the two founded Convergence, with Purtorab as CEO and Toulis as CTO. Convergence raised a $12M pre-seed round led by Balderton, with Salesforce Ventures and Shopify Ventures participating, and built a personal AI agent called Proxy. Salesforce announced in May 2025 that it would acquire the company. His LinkedIn profile now lists Salesforce.
