About Balaji Srinivasan

Background

Balaji Srinivasan trained at Stanford, where he earned a BS, MS and PhD in electrical engineering and an MS in chemical engineering. He taught statistics and bioinformatics there, and his online Startup Engineering course drew more than 250,000 students in 2013, according to a timeline on The Anthology of Balaji.

He co-founded the clinical genomics company Counsyl in 2008. He later co-founded the company that became Earn.com, formerly 21.co, which began as a Bitcoin mining startup and became a paid-messaging network. Fortune reported that Coinbase bought Earn.com in 2018 and that he then became Coinbase's CTO. He was also a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz. He is a co-founder of Coin Center, the crypto policy nonprofit, and wrote The Network State.

He is now based in Singapore and founded the Network School, which he announced in 2024. It is a program for founders and technologists focused on crypto, longevity and building startup communities. In July 2026 Malaysian authorities revoked the licence for its Forest City, Johor campus, and he has since announced an MOU with Kazakhstan for a new campus. He has said the school was not shutting down, and the Malaysian licensing dispute is reported in the press.
