Benjamin Spector
About Benjamin Spector
Benjamin (Ben) Spector is a co-founder of Flapping Airplanes. Sequoia's founder page describes it as a foundational AI research lab working on the data efficiency problem. Index Ventures announced its investment in the lab, which Spector founded with Asher Spector and Aidan Smith. The lab starts from the belief that models could be far more data-efficient than they are today.
Spector is originally from New York. He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics and a master's in computer science at MIT. He then began a computer science PhD at Stanford, where he worked with Chris Re in the Hazy Research group. The Hertz Foundation named him a 2023 Hertz Fellow, and Hazy Research now lists him among its recent alumni. His research sits between systems and machine learning. It includes the ThunderKittens GPU kernel work and a paper on staged speculative decoding for LLM inference.
His personal site also says he ran cofactory.ai with Chappy Asel and Silas Alberti. Index Ventures says that through a project called Prod he helped shape the early formation of companies including Cursor, Mercor, Etched and Decart.
Little of Spector's angel activity is documented publicly, and no complete list of his investments has been published. The one round we can confirm is Polar's seed, described below. Index Ventures also describes him as someone whose advice is sought by peers who have built large companies, and by PhD students and researchers at AI labs.
Polar closed a $5.7M seed round in July 2026 to build an AI-first browser that automates knowledge work for sales, recruiting, marketing and research teams. Press coverage lists Flapping Airplanes co-founder Benjamin Spector among the round's participants. The other named participants include Thomas Dohmke, Phoebe Gates, Erik Bernhardsson and Rob Wachen. This round is on the Lounge deals desk.
Spector has not published a thesis, check size range or preferred stage. The Polar deal was a seed round in an AI application company. His own background is in AI systems, GPU kernels and model efficiency. Founders working on technical AI products can expect him to understand them in depth. That is an inference from his research record, not a stated investing criterion.
