Bill Tai
About Bill Tai
Bill Tai grew up near Chicago to parents who emigrated from Taiwan. He holds a BSEE from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He started as an engineer at semiconductor company LSI Logic before moving into finance.
He has worked in venture capital since 1991. He was a general partner at Institutional Venture Partners from 1994 to 2002 and founding chairman and CEO of iAsiaWorks, which went public in 2000. He then joined Charles River Ventures (now CRV), where he opened the Silicon Valley office and later became Partner Emeritus. He was also founding chairman of IP Infusion and is founding investor and chairman of Treasure Data.
He co-founded MaiTai Global, a kiteboarding-based community of founders and investors, and the Extreme Tech Challenge startup competition. Public bios describe him as a sponsored kiteboarder. Later vehicles include ACTAI Ventures, an early-stage tech investment firm co-founded with Amanda Terry, and Sangha Capital.
Public bios say Tai has backed early-stage companies since 1991, and that more than twenty of them went public. He is described as an early investor in Zoom, Canva and TweetDeck (later acquired by Twitter), and as a lead individual investor in Tango.me and Shoes of Prey. He began backing Dapper Labs in 2018 and has also backed Bitfury, Color Genomics and SafetyCulture.
Data providers count between 40 and 69 investments, depending on the database, so treat any single total as approximate.
Tai was a seed investor in TrustedRouter's $1.25M round, which Axios reported on August 31, 2026. TrustedRouter is a Miami startup that routes requests across more than 600 models through one API. Sam Lessin of Slow Ventures, Linda Avey and George Xing also joined the round. Tai told Axios that the need for routing is "universal" and that routing is "smoking hot".
Other recent AI-related seed deals listed by data providers include Perle AI (October 2024), Robyn (2025) and Umanitek (February 2026). Umanitek has launched an agent aimed at AI hallucinations and deepfakes.
Tai invests mainly at pre-seed and seed. Sector descriptions cover AI, blockchain and deep technology. NFX Signal lists an investment range of $100K to $5.0M with a sweet spot of $250K. That figure comes from the NFX profile, not from Tai, so confirm it before you pitch. He is based in Palo Alto and invests across geographies, with a long history in Asia-Pacific and Australia. He has said he relies on instinct over precedent when backing founders.
