About Bob McGrew

Background

Bob McGrew was an early employee at PayPal, where he worked on cryptography before the eBay acquisition in 2002. He then spent about a decade at Palantir as one of its earliest engineers, and later led engineering and product management there.

He joined OpenAI in 2017 and became Chief Research Officer. He left in 2024, with his departure reported as September 25, 2024. Since then he has appeared on podcasts such as Sequoia Capital's Training Data and has been listed as an adviser to Thinking Machines Lab.

In 2026 he began building Arda, an AI platform for factory automation. The Information reported he is co-founding it with AI researcher Augustus Odena. Press reports citing the Wall Street Journal say Arda is raising about $70M at a $700M valuation, co-led by Founders Fund and Accel. Those figures are reported, not confirmed by the company.

Angel investing track record

McGrew's angel activity is mostly public through funding announcements that list him among the angels in a round. Crunchbase lists 3 personal investments for him, and its latest is the Sycamore seed round. Tracxn lists only Outtake. The databases are incomplete, so this page covers only the investments that press releases and news coverage confirm.

He has also said publicly that he is an investor in and adviser to Distyl, a company building enterprise AI systems, per a third-party summary. Founders should treat that as a secondary source.

AI investments

Sycamore: in March 2026 the company announced a $65M seed round led by Coatue and Lightspeed. Sycamore is building a trusted operating system for enterprise AI agents and is led by former Atlassian CTO Sri Viswanath. McGrew was named as an angel in the round. On X he wrote that AI adoption still lags AI capabilities and that organizations should be far more automated than they are.

Outtake: in January 2026 the digital trust and anti-impersonation company raised a $40M Series B led by ICONIQ. McGrew was one of the angels named in the round, alongside Satya Nadella, Nikesh Arora and others.

Investment focus

The public record points to enterprise AI, AI agents, AI security and AI-driven industrial software. The rounds he is named in are a $65M seed (Sycamore) and a $40M Series B (Outtake), so he has joined both early and later rounds led by institutional investors. The companies named are US-based. McGrew has not published a check size, a fund or a formal investment thesis that we found, so none is given here. On podcasts he has talked about where AI startups can build defensible positions. Founders can read those interviews for his views.
