About Dmitry Balyasny

Background

Dmitry Balyasny is Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Balyasny Asset Management (BAM), a Chicago-based multi-strategy investment firm. He co-founded it in 2001 with Scott Schroeder and Taylor O'Malley. He also leads BAM's global Equities Long/Short business.

He began his trading career at Schonfeld Securities in 1994 and holds a business degree from Loyola University Chicago. He was born in Kyiv and moved to Chicago as a child. In 2021 he founded ATLAS Fellows, a nonprofit that connects under-resourced young people with careers in finance and investing.

BAM has built an internal Applied AI team. According to OpenAI, it was set up in late 2022 and builds AI research tools for the firm's investment teams. In December 2025, Balyasny told Reuters that the biggest tail risk for 2026 is AI surprising to the upside or the downside. His angel investing is separate from BAM's fund activity.
