Kunal Shah
About Kunal Shah
Kunal Shah is an Indian entrepreneur and angel investor based in Bengaluru. Wikipedia says he studied philosophy at Wilson College in Mumbai. He co-founded the digital payments platform FreeCharge, which Snapdeal acquired in 2015. He then founded CRED, a members-only platform for paying credit card bills and earning rewards.
He has also held board roles. His NFX Signal profile lists independent director positions at Syrma SGS Technology and Pine Labs, and an advisor role at AngelList since 2018. Pitchbook lists further advisory roles, including Vahak, OneStack and QED Innovation Labs.
Wikipedia and a Startuptalky article both report that he took over as head of WhatsApp in 2026, in connection with a Meta investment in CRED. Founders may want to ask how much time he has for new angel deals. Neither source says how his angel activity will change.
After selling FreeCharge, Shah became one of India's most active angels. Mint reported in 2022 that he was among the country's most active angel investors by number of deals that year. A 2021 Moneycontrol profile, cited on Wikipedia, reported more than 200 angel investments, including fintech names such as Razorpay and BharatPe.
Trackers give different totals because they count differently. Crunchbase shows 92 investments for him, with no lead investments, exits or companies founded recorded. Tracxn, cited by Startuptalky in June 2026, lists 299 portfolio companies. NFX Signal shows 309 investments on record, and Dealroom shows 176 investments. Treat any single figure as approximate.
Xumane, a third-party blog, reports that he made 58 Pre-Series A investments in FY22, more than any other angel in that category.
Other notable names in his portfolio include Razorpay, Unacademy, Spinny, Zetwerk and Rapido, according to Dealroom.
Crunchbase records 23 AI investments by Shah since 2023. The AI companies listed there are Fibr, Schnitt AI, Equal AI, Superleap, Mugafi, OnFinance AI, Prosperr.io, The Land Bankers, Ringg, Revspot, SydeLabs and Affluense AI.
NFX Signal ranks him in AI at Pre-seed, Seed, Series A and Series B. It also shows a Ringg Series A of $5M in January 2026 in which he is listed as an investor. Pitchbook separately records an August 2026 deal for Ringg AI. Dealroom lists Equal AI, described as an AI call assistant, among his portfolio companies.
The public sources do not say whether he has a specific AI thesis. The AI deals look like a continuation of his broader early-stage activity, which is mostly India-based companies.
Shah invests at the angel stage and in early rounds. In an interview with The Ken, quoted by Global Indian, he described his thesis for investments from angel rounds up to Series B. He said the main thing he looks for is what he can learn from the founders. He also said he lets founders determine the size of the cheque, and that he invests in founders who are introduced to him.
NFX Signal lists an investment range of $10K to $500K with a sweet spot of $100K. This comes from a third-party profile, not from Shah himself. The same profile ranks him in fintech and SaaS as well as AI, across Pre-seed to Series B. Startupintros describes his focus as early-stage fintech and consumer internet startups in India.
His base is Bengaluru, and most of the companies named in public sources are Indian. NFX Signal also lists some non-Indian companies among his recent investments.
