About Martin Varsavsky
Martin Varsavsky was born in Buenos Aires in 1960. He studied at New York University and Columbia, where he earned an MBA in finance in 1985. He started his first company, the real estate firm Urban Capital Corporation, while still in college. He then founded Medicorp, a biotech company, and the telecom company Viatel.
He moved to Madrid in 1995 and founded Jazztel in the late 1990s. Jazztel became a Spanish telecom operator listed on the London Stock Exchange. In 1999 he founded Ya.com, which T-Online later acquired for over €550 million. In 2005 he launched Fon, a shared WiFi network. He taught entrepreneurship at IE Business School from 1999 to 2011 and sat on the supervisory board of Axel Springer.
Since 2015 his focus has been health. He founded Prelude Fertility, now Inception Fertility, and Overture Life, which automates embryology labs. He is chairman of Gameto and founded Goggo Network. In 2026 he is CEO of Certuma, an Austin-based clinical AI company.
VAS Ventures is described on Crunchbase as his early-stage investment fund. Its profile lists 23andMe, Eolia, SmartThings, Tumblr and Aura Biosciences among his investments. Crunchbase counts 25 personal investments, and PitchBook lists him as an active angel.
Tracxn records several rounds with dates: MUBI (Series E, 2015), CookUnity (Series A, January 2021), Henry (Series A, May 2022), Outdid (seed, June 2023) and Curative (Series B, October 2025).
Betterness, a Miami AI wellness company, closed a $2.5M seed round announced on April 24, 2026, and Varsavsky is named among its investors. The company launched Bett-i, a voice-first AI life-coaching system, alongside the round.
He also founded Certuma, which launched from stealth in 2026 with a $10M seed round led by 8VC. Forbes reports it aims to build an FDA-approved AI doctor, starting with common conditions such as urinary tract infections and sore throats. Certuma is a company he runs, not an angel check.
VAS Ventures describes itself as looking for companies whose founders think big, in mobility, mobile and SaaS. His recent activity is mostly health and biotech: fertility, longevity, clinical AI and wellness. Aggregators list pre-seed and seed as his stages, and his portfolio includes US, UK, Spanish and Argentine companies.
