About Steve Newman

Background

Steve Newman co-founded Writely, the online word processor that Google acquired in 2006 and that became the basis for Google Docs. At Google he was tech lead on its first cross-regional transactional database and led work to unify file management across Google Apps.

He then founded Scalyr, a server log management company incorporated in 2011. Scalyr raised a $2.1M seed round led by Susa Ventures in 2015 and was acquired by SentinelOne in 2021. Earlier companies include Bitcraft, which Macromedia acquired. He studied mathematics at the University of Michigan and has a master's in computer science from Stanford.

Today he is chairman and president of the Golden Gate Institute for AI, a nonprofit that runs the Curve conference. He also writes the Second Thoughts newsletter, which gives analysis of AI developments.

Angel investing track record

Little of Newman's angel activity is public. Crunchbase lists one personal investment, the Marker seed round. He has not published a fund, a check size or an investing thesis that we could find.

AI investments

Newman is named as an angel in Marker's $13M seed round, announced on July 9, 2026. Marker is a London-based startup building an AI-native word processor for writers. Index Ventures led the round, with LocalGlobe participating. Other angels named in coverage include Slack co-founder Cal Henderson and Hugging Face's Thomas Wolf. Marker says its tools write with the writer, not for the writer.

Investment focus

The one public data point is an AI writing and productivity tool at seed stage. Newman's own background is in document collaboration, developer tools and infrastructure software, and he now works on AI analysis and discourse. He has made no public statements about stages, sectors, geographies or check size. Founders should not assume any of these beyond what his past work suggests.
