Apple cuts iPhone 18 Pro component orders as AI-driven memory prices push phone costs up
Nikkei Asia reported that Apple told some suppliers to reduce October component orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max by 15% to 20% from the original request. An executive said Apple had grown more cautious about volumes since the phones launched in early September. The Pro now starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299. UBS analysts pointed to shorter wait times and weaker demand after the price increases. The cause cited is memory. Hyperscalers are pulling advanced DRAM and high bandwidth memory toward AI data centers, and the same week Samsung reported 100 trillion won in third quarter profit on that demand. This is one of the clearest signs yet that the AI buildout is raising costs for consumer hardware. For builders it points to continued memory scarcity that keeps inference hardware expensive, and to pricing pressure on any device or on-device AI product that depends on DRAM supply.
