Dario Amodei reportedly asked Meta's Alexandr Wang for compute this year, and Meta said no
According to the Wall Street Journal, Amodei phoned Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, to find more capacity, and Meta weighed the request internally before declining. CNBC had reported in July that Anthropic was in early talks to lease roughly $10 billion of Meta compute over two years, so the refusal suggests that arrangement is on hold. The same WSJ piece describes cofounder Tom Brown visiting Musk's operation in late March to broker the rental that became Anthropic's SpaceX deal, which costs about $1.25 billion a month through May 2029. It also says Sergey Brin sometimes overrides Google's formal compute allocation. The common thread: top executives are now personally negotiating GPU access, even with direct competitors. For founders, this is a signal about supply. If a lab with Anthropic's revenue has to call rivals for chips, smaller companies should expect tight capacity and long commitments, and should build in the option to switch between model providers and clouds.
