About Apoorva Mehta

Background

Apoorva Mehta is a Canadian-American entrepreneur who studied at the University of Waterloo. He worked at BlackBerry, Qualcomm and Amazon before moving to San Francisco in 2010 to start companies. He launched about 20 startups between 2010 and 2012, and almost all failed.

He founded Instacart in 2012 with Max Mullen and Brandon Leonardo, and the company went through Y Combinator's Summer 2012 batch. Mehta was CEO until 2021 and then executive chairman. He left the board after Instacart's September 2023 IPO and remained its largest individual shareholder.

After Instacart he started the health-tech company Cloud Health Systems. The Wall Street Journal, as reported by Axios, said it raised $30M in 2022 at a $200M valuation. He now runs Abundance, an AI-driven hedge fund. Bloomberg reported that it raised $100M in seed equity and uses thousands of automated agents to research and place trades.

Angel investing track record

Mehta invests his own money, and his X profile describes him as Founder/CEO of Abundance and former founder/CEO of Instacart. He has posted that he is hiring a Head of Technical Investing to lead his personal investments. Public databases list his angel deals inconsistently, and some profiles appear to mix him up with other people of the same name. This page therefore lists only investments confirmed by press coverage or by Mehta himself.

AI investments

Mehta was one of the angels in NavigateAI's $25M seed round, which closed in May 2026. Elad Gil led the round, with Khosla Ventures, Fifth Wall, Lennar, Tishman Speyer and Helix Electric participating. NavigateAI was founded in 2025 by Opendoor co-founder Eric Wu. It builds AI copilots for construction and field-service workers. TechCrunch reported the round at a $225M post-money valuation.

In a LinkedIn post, Mehta wrote that his work at Abundance has shaped his view of how long-running agents, continuous improvement and proprietary data will change entire industries. He said this led him to invest in Cognition, SSI, Instinct, Forus and Trajectory, among others. He did not give investment dates or amounts.

Investment focus

Mehta has not published a check size, stage preference or formal thesis. His own statement points to AI agents, continuous learning systems and proprietary data as areas of interest. NavigateAI, where he joined a seed round, applies AI to physical-world work. He is based in San Francisco.
