About Brian Armstrong

Background

Brian Armstrong is co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, which he co-founded with Fred Ehrsam in June 2012. Coinbase listed on Nasdaq in 2021. He studied at Rice University, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. Before Coinbase he worked as a software engineer at Airbnb, where he focused on payments and fraud prevention.

In 2012 he joined the Y Combinator accelerator and received $150,000, which he used to start Coinbase. He also co-founded ResearchHub in 2020, a platform for open scientific collaboration, and NewLimit in 2022, a biotech company working on epigenetic reprogramming.

Angel investing track record

PitchBook classifies Armstrong as an angel investor. Its profile lists 20 investments, 13 current portfolio companies and 5 exits. Crunchbase lists 17 personal investments. The counts differ because private rounds are often only partly disclosed, so neither figure is a complete record.

Investments made through Coinbase Ventures are a corporate portfolio and are separate from his personal angel checks. Rounds that name him as an individual include Binti (Series B), AtoB (Series A), Orchid (seed) and Pilgrim (seed), according to Crunchbase. PitchBook also lists a seed investment in Special dated June 2026. Founders should not read Coinbase Ventures deals as his personal investments.

AI investments

On the Lounge deals desk, Armstrong appears in the NavigateAI seed round of $25M, announced in May 2026. NavigateAI was founded by Eric Wu, a former Opendoor CEO, and builds an AI copilot for construction and other field workers. Elad Gil led the round. Khosla Ventures, Fifth Wall, Lennar, Tishman Speyer and Helix Electric also took part. Other named angels were Tony Xu, Apoorva Mehta and Logan Green.

Outside his angel checks, NewLimit, which he co-founded, uses an AI model to guide its drug discovery experiments. TechCrunch reported that NewLimit raised a $130M Series B led by Kleiner Perkins in 2025. Armstrong has also said publicly that Coinbase is building financial accounts for AI agents.

Investment focus

His public record is too thin to describe a fixed thesis. NavigateAI and Pilgrim were seed rounds, and the other named rounds include a Series A and a Series B. Sectors named in public records include AI for field work, healthcare and biotech, and financial software. He has not publicly stated a check size, and no source found gives one. He has not published a statement of what he looks for in pitches.
