Garry Tan
About Garry Tan
Garry Tan is President and CEO of Y Combinator. Y Combinator's own people page says he was a YC partner from 2011 to 2015, where he built parts of the founder experience including Bookface and the Demo Day website. A third-party profile dates his CEO role to January 2023. He holds a BS in Computer Systems Engineering from Stanford.
Before YC he was an early designer and engineering manager at Palantir, where he designed the company logo. He co-founded Posterous (YC S08), a blog platform that Twitter acquired, and later co-founded Posthaven. He also co-founded Initialized Capital, a seed-stage venture firm.
He is based in San Francisco. His X bio describes him as a designer and engineer who helps founders. It also names GStack and GBrain, which he says he created.
Crunchbase lists 32 investments for Garry Tan, with 0 lead investments, 0 exits and 0 companies founded. These counts reflect Crunchbase's person profile only and are smaller than the totals on other databases. Dealroom shows 74 portfolio companies, and Tracxn shows 54 as an angel. The databases count differently, so treat all of these as approximate.
His best-known early bet is Coinbase. One portfolio write-up reports he wrote a $150,000 check into Coinbase in 2012 and that it returned about 6,000x. That figure is a reported number, not one he has confirmed here. Through Initialized Capital he also invested early in companies such as Flexport, Instacart, Rippling and Cruise, according to the Mercury investor database.
Because he is YC's CEO and a former Initialized partner, some of his holdings were made through those firms rather than personally. A third-party profile reports that part of his portfolio sits outside his personal checks.

Crunchbase's activity timeline links him to a Lambda round dated March 21, 2023. It links him to Perplexity and Ellipsis rounds dated April 23, 2024, and to a Black Forest Labs round dated August 1, 2024. Black Forest Labs, a German image and video model company, announced a $31 million Series Seed round when it launched. Dealroom lists Perplexity, Lambda and Black Forest Labs among his largest current holdings by company valuation.
On X and in interviews he has said agents will need memory of the user's context to be useful. He has also said AI lets non-technical founders build complex products.
Third-party investor databases describe him as a pre-seed and seed investor. Seedlist lists sectors as fintech, developer tools, AI, enterprise, consumer, crypto and infrastructure. Mercury says he invests across most industries. Tracxn lists activity in the United States, India and four other geographies.
He has not published a personal check size that we could find. Databases disagree: Seedlist gives $125K to $500K, VC Sheet gives an average of $150K, and Mercury gives $1M to $5M for Initialized Capital. Treat these as estimates and confirm directly.
On what he looks for, he has said publicly that earnestness is rarer and more important than a polished resume or a bold pitch. In a Crunchbase News interview he also described his approach to the earliest stages of venture investing. A portfolio write-up summarizes his thesis as backing founders that others do not yet believe in.
