About Ilkka Paananen

Background

Ilkka Paananen is the co-founder and CEO of Supercell, the Helsinki games company behind Clash of Clans, Clash Royale and Brawl Stars. Supercell was founded in 2010. According to Aalto University, it was the first European tech startup to reach a $10 billion valuation.

Before Supercell he was CEO and co-founder of the Finnish games developer Sumea. Digital Chocolate later acquired Sumea, and he worked there as President until 2010. He holds a Master of Science degree from Helsinki University of Technology (now part of Aalto University).

He joined the LEGO A/S Board of Directors in April 2024, according to LEGO. He also co-founded the We Foundation with Mikko Kodisoja, which works on social inequality and helping disadvantaged children in Finland. Aalto describes his investing and mentoring of other entrepreneurs as running through his founder office, Illusian.

Angel investing track record

Paananen invests personally and through Illusian. Public databases count his investments differently. Crunchbase's public profile lists 54 personal investments, PitchBook lists 53, and Tracxn lists a portfolio of 42 companies. The Lounge figures from Crunchbase are 22 investments in total and 13 in AI since 2023. Treat any single count as approximate.

Earlier backing includes the seed rounds of Wolt and Eastnine, listed on Crunchbase. Tracxn names Wolt and Omio among his most notable investments. PitchBook also lists advisory roles at Cytora, Atomico (Entrepreneur Partner) and Lifeline Ventures (Partner, Advisor and Entrepreneur-in-Residence).

Crunchbase shows him as a participant rather than a lead on his rounds, with 0 lead investments and 0 exits in the Lounge snapshot. PitchBook, by contrast, lists exits, including Flow AI in January 2025.

AI investments

His AI activity since 2023 is mostly seed and Series A rounds led by institutional funds, where he joins as one of several angels. Crunchbase and portfolio announcements show these:

CodeWords, a London AI agent startup for workflow automation, raised a $9 million seed led by Visionaries. Sifted reports that Illusian took part, alongside angels including ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski.

nexos.ai, a Vilnius enterprise AI orchestration platform, raised $8 million led by Index Ventures. ArcticStartup lists him among the angels, with Datadog's Olivier Pomel and Wix's Avishai Abrahami.

Zero, an AI-agent CRM alternative, raised a $10.3 million seed led by Primary Venture Partners. Startbase names him among the participating angels.

Qutwo, a Helsinki AI company, raised a EUR 25 million angel round at a EUR 325 million post-money valuation. Vestbee lists him among the participants, along with Yuri Milner and Xavier Niel.

Crunchbase also lists him on Lovable's Series A, Linear, IXI, Gradium and BottleCap AI. Its timeline places the BottleCap AI round on December 2, 2025.

Investment focus

The public record shows early-stage rounds in software and AI: seed and Series A, plus some later rounds such as Linear's. Areas include AI agents and workflow automation, enterprise AI tooling, AI-built software, voice AI and developer or productivity tools. Tracxn lists Finland and the United States among his investment geographies, and his recent rounds also include companies in the UK, Sweden and Lithuania.

I found no public statement of his check size, target ownership or a formal thesis. I also found no public pitch process. Founders should not assume one exists. Where he has joined rounds, the announcements show a lead institutional investor alongside him, so a warm introduction through a co-investor or another founder in his network is the more realistic route.
