Patrick Collison
About Patrick Collison
Patrick Collison is an Irish entrepreneur based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was born in 1988 and won Ireland's Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in 2005 at age sixteen. He studied mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tracxn dates his startup career to 2007 with Auctomatic, which it lists as the first of two companies he founded.
In 2010 he co-founded Stripe with his brother John, and he is its CEO. Stripe builds financial infrastructure that lets businesses accept payments and run operations online.
In 2021 he co-founded the Arc Institute, a nonprofit biomedical research organization, with Silvana Konermann and Patrick Hsu. In 2026 he co-founded the Rhine Group, a policy forum and think tank, and serves as co-chair. He also writes and speaks about science, innovation and economic growth.
Crunchbase shows 32 investments for Patrick Collison, with no lead investments recorded. Other databases count differently: Tracxn lists 30 portfolio companies and PitchBook lists 68 investments. These counts depend on how each service tracks deals, and Patrick Collison does not publish a complete list.
The Irish Times reported in 2023 that the Collison brothers had been active angels for some time, backing companies in fintech, AI, cleantech and robotics. Examples it named include a minority angel stake in Terraform Industries' $6 million seed round in April 2023. It also named the Collisons' participation in a February 2023 seed round of $9.7 million for Rain, a wildfire-management drone company, led by DBL Partners.
Earlier investments listed on public investor databases include Alt, Retool and AssemblyAI. Tracxn names Alt and Retool as his most notable investments.
Crunchbase counts 21 AI investments since 2023. Its AI portfolio list includes Radical Numerics, Matic Robots, Cognition, Brain Co., Tasklet, Antithesis, Cortex, The Bot Company, MatX, Fundamental Research Labs, Drafted and Monaco.
The public record shows that he often invests together with John Collison, and sometimes with Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross. In February 2026, Bloomberg reported that MatX, an AI chip startup, raised more than $500 million in a round led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness. Patrick and John Collison took part. Tracxn lists this as his most recent recorded investment.
The Bot Company, a household robotics startup founded by Kyle Vogt, raised $150 million in a round that included Patrick and John Collison. It raised another $150 million Series B in March 2025 led by Greenoaks, again with both Collisons participating. In 2023 the Irish Times reported that the Collisons invested in Matic, which makes home-cleaning robots. A later report says Matic raised a $115 million Series A in November 2025 led by the Collisons, but that comes from a single secondary source.
The sectors in his public record are AI models and tooling, AI chips, robotics, developer and enterprise software, climate and energy hardware, and fintech. Tracxn reports his investments are mainly in the United States and United Kingdom, with one other country.
He has invested at seed, as in Terraform Industries and Rain in 2023, and in much larger later rounds, such as MatX's Series B in 2026. In most of the rounds above he took part as one investor among several rather than leading. Crunchbase shows no lead investments.
He has not published a check size or an investment thesis for angel deals. His public writing and statements focus on science, innovation and economic growth, and those themes are visible in what he funds, but nothing found says what he screens for in a pitch.
