About Thomas Gottheil

Background

Thomas Gottheil co-founded the software company Frontastic in 2017 with Henning Emmrich, Kore Nordmann and Tobias Schlitt, and was its CEO. Before that he led a company that built e-commerce platforms. Commercetools, a headless commerce platform, acquired Frontastic in November 2021.

After the sale he stayed on to lead the integration into commercetools. He later left to work on new ideas and said he remains a commercetools shareholder. He is based in Germany, and his LinkedIn profile lists him as a co-founder of goodgrow.

Angel investing track record

In a 2022 interview with Verve Ventures, he said he would not make direct angel investments for the time being, because he wanted to focus on the Frontastic integration first. His later activity shows he has since started investing.

Via goodgrow, with Henning Emmrich and Michal Bartmanski, he invested in autarc, which builds an operating system for heat pumps. The org-chart site TheOrg lists him as an angel investor in better ventures, nuuEnergy, autarc, Logistikbude and repath. It also lists him as a limited partner in World Fund and Planet A Ventures. Crunchbase records two personal investments: an angel round in AXO and a pre-seed round in kolum.earth. He is also listed on the better ventures angel network page.

AI investments

His AI investment on record is ShopAgentic, a Hannover-based startup building a native agentic commerce system. It uses a team of specialized AI agents that each own one commerce function, such as catalog management. ShopAgentic announced him as a business angel on February 27, 2026.

He is part of the angel group in ShopAgentic's €1.9M pre-seed, which closed on June 11, 2026. May Ventures and Greenfield Capital led the round. ShopAgentic's co-founder Alexander Ringsdorff wrote that Gottheil has lived through the shift from monolith to headless to composable commerce. Ringsdorff expects the next shift to be driven by agentic systems.

Investment focus

His public investments are at pre-seed and early stage, mainly in e-commerce infrastructure and climate technology. Most of the companies named above are based in Germany. He has not published a check size or a fund size, so none is listed here.
