Amazon joins Microsoft in dropping NDAs when negotiating data center deals with local governments

Amazon announced the change in a longer blog post arguing that data centers are good for the communities that host them. Microsoft made the same commitment earlier. Until now, both companies regularly asked local officials to sign confidentiality agreements during site talks. TechCrunch's Equity podcast discussed the move on Oct 11, asking whether moratoriums reflect a communication problem in the industry. NDAs had become a target for critics. Days earlier, a report from Senate Democrats Warren, Blumenthal and Van Hollen said several AI data center companies planned to keep using NDAs and seeking tax breaks, while households still covered part of the grid costs. Local campaigns against new sites have spread across the country this year. For AI companies, siting and permits now help decide how fast compute arrives. More openness from hyperscalers may make approvals smoother. It also raises expectations that neoclouds and smaller developers will publish terms, power use and community benefits.
