Probe finds AI firms lobbying US health officials inside a 1,700-member Slack run by Medicare agency CMS

The KFF Health News investigation, published October 9 with CBS News, draws on thousands of Slack messages, meeting transcripts and recordings from a CMS workspace called the Health Technology Ecosystem. It grew to about 1,700 members in a year, with only a handful of patient advocates, doctors or hospital representatives. In February, an invitation posted there brought at least 35 industry organizations, including Microsoft, Anthropic, OpenAI, Apple and Google, to an FDA session on conversational AI for patients, where companies were asked to explain how their products access sensitive medical records. Other participants include Oura, Palantir and 8VC, the venture firm associated with Finn Kennedy. Topics ranged from health app access to patient records to Medicare programs that could open new business for tech firms. For health AI founders, the rules on records access and chatbot oversight are being drafted in rooms most startups never see. Expect scrutiny of this channel, and possibly a more formal comment process.
