About Michael Carbin

Background

Michael Carbin is an Associate Professor in EECS at MIT, affiliated with CSAIL, where his research areas include programming languages and software engineering. His own company bio says he earned his PhD from MIT and a BS from Stanford. His work spans AI and ML systems, and programming languages and compilation for emerging computing systems.

He was a founding advisor of MosaicML, a platform for training and deploying custom AI models. MIT and press coverage also describe him as a co-founder. Databricks acquired MosaicML in 2023 in a deal reported at roughly $1.3 billion.

He is now a cofounder and Senior Fellow of Unconventional AI. The company is building analog-inspired silicon intended to cut the energy use of AI. Its CEO is Naveen Rao, who previously founded MosaicML. Other co-founders are Sara Achour and MeeLan Lee. Bloomberg reported a seed round at a $4.5 billion valuation in December 2025, and DatacenterDynamics put the round at $475M.

Angel investing track record

Crunchbase lists Carbin as an individual angel investor with one recorded investment, Standard Kernel. He is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. No other personal investments, dates or fund vehicles were found in public sources.

AI investments

In March 2026, Standard Kernel announced a $20M seed round led by Jump Capital. General Catalyst, Felicis, Cowboy Ventures, Link Ventures, Essence VC, CoreWeave and Ericsson Ventures also took part. The announcement named Carbin among the angel and strategic investors, along with David M. Siegel, Jeff Dean, Jonathan Frankle, Sachin Katti and Walden Yan. Standard Kernel builds AI systems that generate GPU kernels to optimize AI workloads. It plans to use the funds to grow its autonomous kernel generation platform and its deployments with AI-native and enterprise partners.

Investment focus

The one public data point is a seed-stage investment in AI systems software. His professional work centers on AI systems, compilers, programming languages and energy-efficient computing hardware. Together these suggest an interest in technical infrastructure, but that is an inference, not a stated thesis. Carbin has not publicly stated a check size, target stage or geography.
